One White Tulip

One White Tulip
a cotton bud
What a perfect example,
of a pure pristine denial
cheap as paper
lucid as fat-free milk
but so utterly convincing
of his resemblance to luxury
to buttercream icing
and hand-woven silk
fooling the naïve female gaze

I love white tulips
I love the way one white tulip looks on my table
so clean
like the linen by its side
It reminds me of myself, of you, us, and them
and how we all change personas
until it’s time for our buds to bloom
eventually we all stop fooling
removed from the bunch we allow ourselves to flower.
